Warm Springs
A decent biopic about FDR's struggle with polio, his complicated but evolving marriage, and his regaining of the will to be in public life.
We have our own Warm Springs, an Indian reservation in central Oregon with a resort lodge on its premises. I had an amusing experience there.
A convention of civil engineers had hired me to perform my Woody Guthrie show for their entertainment. The pay was great, so I accepted. I showed up and had time to kill in the lodge before I went on. The Blazers were in the play-offs (it was that long ago ha ha), so I went into the bar to check out the score. What I found there was surrealistic: a bar full of Indians in full war-dance costume, all glued to the TV set! A Native American dance group also with time on their hands, checking out the score.
When it was time for me to go on, the slide show about the SF earthquake ahead of me was running long. An apologetic and harried program chair asked if I could shorten my show -- for the same pay. Since it was built on modules, no problem at all. The hour show became 45 minutes. A bit later in became 30 minutes. Later still it became 15 minutes. Finally I told the chair, Look, as long as you pay me, I don't have to do this. She had the check on her, a damn good one, and I returned to the bar without having sung a single song. Actually I felt out of place and relieved, so this was perfect. I had a free weekend in a resort and went home with a fat check and got to see warriors root for the Blazers in full regalia.
