Buffalo Bill and the Indians
This Robert Altman film is "inspired by" Arthur Kopit's play Indians. I think it's a brilliant play but difficult to do and rarely done. I feel fortunate to have seen (and reviewed) a decent college production in Bend years ago. This dark comedy and political satire, bordering at times on farce. On stage, it's highly theatrical, using stick horses and other props that adds to the bitter surrealism of the evening.
This is harder to pull off on film, with real horses and the images of realism, and yet Altman goes over the top enough to stay true to the heart of the work. I prefer the stage play but this film is a sleeper and recommended.
