Shame on me!
Where have I been? All these many years, reading about all these teenagers having kids out of wedlock, even having a connection to a few, a friend's kid pregnant, a student pregnant, through all these pregnancies and births, I always assumed my fellow citizens on the far right would disapprove; but then along comes Palin and her daughter, and my eyes get opened, I learn that my fellow citizens of the far right see in this situation an opportunity for great moral growth and elevation, an opportunity to demonstrate that one "walks the talk" of pro life; which surely all those hundreds of thousands of teenagers over the years were doing just as surely as Palin and her daughter, having their babies and walking the talk, but somehow I missed the ecstatic litany of my fellow citizens of the far right in their cases, this litany being sung to the Palins now, missed hearing how the black teenager in Chicago and the white homeless teenager and that girl across town who was having the baby of a rapist, and this other girl who was having the kid of her own father, somehow I missed that they were walking the talk by having their kids and therefore were morally elevated, winning great brownie points in the ranks of the conservatives, walking the talk and showing how much they supported life; I missed all this and only the Palin situation has opened my eyes. Shame, shame on me.
