I've been studying music seriously a bit over two years now. Many of my goals have been reached. The primary goal was to learn how to put music I hear in my head onto paper. I can do that. It was never my goal to learn how to play per se. My next goal is to learn how to arrange music, that is, write for more than one voice. I'm making progress.
But my long range goal is to write music drama, or chamber opera. I come to this from a certain frustration from working with composers. I've worked with two whose music I love -- but working with them has been frustrating because they are scattered and slow and it takes them forever to finish a project. Indeed, I've started and finished half a dozen projects in the time it takes them to do one. I realize I work with more than usual obsession (I was delighted to learn the actress/writer Hollie Olson works as obsessively as I do!), but I'm just tired of waiting, waiting, waiting, for these collaborators to move forward. So I decided to try and do everything myself. The music won't be as good, I'm sure, but at least projects will get finished.
I think it's time to start one of these projects. I have two immediately in mind, a short one, to video tape, and a long, ambitious one. I think I should open the scores for both and start the process.
