I've started scrolling through the volumes of Maupassant's stories, looking for ones that may be appropriate for a chamber opera piece. Many can be eliminated instantly -- too many characters, the action too sprawling. This first time through the huge document, I'm kicking out stories to consider more carefully and thus far I've found six through the first six of thirteen volumes of stories. Since I only need to find two more to add to The Love of Long Ago, I'm already in good shape. This is going to be fun -- I've found a few gems already. I may have a hard time deciding which two to use. Onward.
