Anne Gilchrist & Walt Whitman



Here is one of the great and strange attractions in literary history: the English woman and writer Anne Gilchrist reading Leaves of Grass and deciding she has heard the voice of her Soul Mate. So she writes Whitman to propose marriage, saying that even at 42 she is young enough to bear him three children. And eventually she even came to the United States despite his protests to make her case in person! Read more in Today In Literature.
