Education has become obscenely expensive. I know so many students struggling to afford school or to get into school, especially grad school, and to stay once they get admitted.
In the late 1960s, my experience in grad school was very different. I was wealthy! I do not lie: a wealthy grad student! Consider this: I had a Teaching Assistantship, which waived tuition and gave me a small stipend; I also had income from the Cold War G.I. Bill; I also had a full Shubert Playwriting Fellowship; I also was a stringer for Northwest Magazine, making some money writing; and I made beer and pizza money singing folk music in a club once a week. I was rolling in dough! My partner at the time also had a full fellowship, and we rented a house for around $100/month. Over the school year, we saved thousands of dollars to live on during the summer. It was remarkable. Indeed, I never had more cash in my pocket and fewer debts than when I was a graduate student! Totally amazing.
Alas, I would learn how to play the American Debt Game soon enough -- but grad school was great.
