Cal Tech wins!
A victory by the Cal Tech basketball team made the news on public radio this morning -- because it broke a losing streak of 207 games stretching back to 1993! I lettered in freshman basketball at Cal Tech in 1958 (I also lettered in football and track) but we actually won about a third of our games because we had a guard who was about 50% accurate from what is now three-point range (just two points in those days). We didn't do as well in football, though we did tie a school record by scoring two touchdowns in the same game, losing only 52-12, which was considerably better than our mud bowl loss to Nixon's alma mater Whittier, 85-0. When you lose a game in the mud by such a score, playing the full 60 minutes (players went both ways in those days, and I was quarterback and safety), you come to appreciate that sports has much to offer besides victory. I'm serious.
At any rate, congratulations to Cal Tech for breaking a very long losing streak.
