Images from the past

I woke up with a strange image from the past in my head. I was at a book signing, seated next to Craig Lesley. His first novel recently had been published, as well as my play Christmas at the Juniper Tavern. Down the table, Jean Auel was signing copies of her latest Cave Bear book. 100s, I mean hundreds, of women were lined up to get her signature. Lesley and I were pretty much ignored, lost in the crush of all these women elbowing forward to get close to Auel. Pop lit v. literature, we joked, or something to that effect. Lesley was unknown at the time, his first novel, and although I was better known, plays are never big sellers. I think he signed 5 or 6 books before the night was over, I about half that. Auel must have signed 500. I do remember having a good time, however, in a surrealistic sort of way. L. and I amused one another.
