In my editorial chores for the review, I use two software programs, both freeware, that I couldn't live without: Alley Code, an HTML editor, and Xenu, a broken link detector. I was upset, therefore, when yesterday I couldn't open Alley Code. An error message said an address was wrong. I did a restore, going back only a few days, and it worked again. But later in the day, the same thing happened. To make a long story short, a new Windows update was the problem. AC worked before the installation of the update but not after.
I went to the Alley Code website and to my delight and surprise, they were on top of the problem. The fault was Microsoft's, not theirs, and they already had a patch to fix the problem. This is extraordinary service and support for free software! I had to dash off an email to them, thanking them for making my day better with such an easy fix.
Despite all the scams, spams, phishings and such, on the net you probably find more acts of random kindness than you do in the world at large. The Linux and free software folks especially go out of their way to be useful and helpful for no charge. It's quite remarkable in comparison to the greed that defines the larger corporate world.
If you need a good HTML editor, check out Alley Code. I find it quick and friendly, and I especially like it's tabbed interface that permits me to work on several files at once -- thus I can prepare something for the review with its contents and title pages up for updating at the same time.
Another remarkable free program is Agent Ransack, the lite free version of FileLocator Pro. AR is powerful enough for me, the most useful hard drive search tool I have ever used. I am constantly forgetting where something is, and with AR I find it in a jiffy.

Thanks for those links. I had a cataract operation this AM, so I'm flying blind with a left eye that still has a cataract and a patched right eye. I'll check them out when I'm seeing better and get some free time.
