When our prez, up for a job at WVa, withdrew his name, it looked like he'd decided to stay. Then, the next day, this announcement. Under Bernstine, PSU became the largest university in the state, passing the enrollment at the University of Oregon.
Portland State University President Dan Bernstine is leaving Oregon's largest state university after overseeing a decade of growth in enrollment, fundraising, new buildings and programs, both here and abroad.
Bernstine, a lawyer, departs to become president and chief executive officer of the Law School Admission Council, the Pennsylvania-based organization that administers the entrance exam for U.S. law schools.
Tuesday's announcement took some on campus by surprise, although people have known he was considering other jobs. The average tenure of a university president is 61/2 years. Last week, he withdrew as one of three finalists for the presidency at West Virginia University.
Bernstine characteristically had little to say when questioned by a reporter at the Capitol.
He was in the company of the school's new football coach, Jerry Glanville, who grabbed the outgoing president by the shoulders and joked that Bernstine had to leave town after hiring him.
