The bottom line

Here's my problem with American political campaigns: they deteriorate into a contest for the least worse. The candidates contribute to this by spending more time on what's bad about the other guy than what's right about oneself.

Here is Wayne Morse on switching parties after being disappointed in Eisenhower, even though he was the first one to back him for President:

All I hear is double-talk
and political mush. As hard as this is
to say for a lifelong Republican like
myself, Adlai Stevenson sounded like a
statesman compared to Eisenhower.

Double-talk and political mush. Nothing has changed. And unfortunately the Obama campaign is no better at rising above this than the McCain campaign. Obama himself is a great inspiring orator. His campaign is "pissing in public" (Norman O. Brown).
