This, too, shall pass. Such was my mood as I cruised this morning so early that my breakfast stops weren't open yet. The election campaign, I reflected, is Orwellian in tone. Never in my lifetime has a strategy depended so much on Mencken's assertion that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. The mantra is, Repeat a lie often enough and people will believe it. Will they? I guess we'll find out.
But the campaigns have become as boring, because repetitive, as empty in substance. The debates should prove interesting indeed, to see if the hosts ask tough substantive questions and if the candidates answer them. And if they do, does it even matter? This appears to be an election about images and wishful thinking (easy answers). But things have changed quickly and can change again. We'll find out.
"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people." This election is like a test of Mencken's proposition.
This, too, shall pass.
