From the mail bag

Are you an atheist? You seem to spend a lot of time criticizing Christians.

Who cares? But I'll reply since your email was so polite.

No, I am not an atheist. However, I also am not a Christian.

What folks do in the privacy of their church or in the privacy of their bedroom doesn't bother me in the least. But I am troubled when evangelicals are given positions of political power that can affect my life. Here's why.

I don't want someone making foreign policy who believes that the end of the world is a good thing. This does not suggest policy development in my best interests.

I don't want someone in power who believes the Holy Bible has greater claim to space on a library shelf than "The Catcher in the Rye" or, for that matter, the Koran or millions of other books. I don't believe there is one single book in existence that has a monopoly on Truth and I want to keep folks who do away from control over my reading list.

I also have great, and public, admiration for a number of Christians, such as C. S. Lewis, G. K. Chesterton and Gabriel Marcel (and other Christian existentialists).

I hope this answers your question.
