Another arbiter of taste gone

First Rust Hills, now Ted Solotaroff -- major editors of my generation. Solotaroff edited the incredible NEW AMERICAN REVIEW, which first published G Sorrentino's "The Moon In Its Flight," my favorite American short story. It also regularly published stories by M. F. Beal, when she was Mary Shetzline married to David, one of our underrated writers (author of Heckletooth 3). It's the season for loss. And is anyone replacing these champions of literary fiction?

Ted Solotaroff, Literary Talent

Fresh Air from WHYY, August 15, 2008 · Theodore Solotaroff, founder of the writers' showcase The New American Review, died Aug. 8 of complications from pneumonia. He was 79.

A writer, editor, critic and all-around publishing-world influencer, Solotaroff helped writers like Philip Roth achieve international recognition. The writer Ian McEwan described him as "the most influential editor of his time," and said Solotaroff "shaped not only the tastes, but the direction of American writing."
