An adequate production

The university's production of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross was okay but disappointing, adequate but not great. The highlight of the production was the set.

The acting was uneven, the problem: of the seven characters, only two were outstanding performances and that many were weak. To their credit, only one of the actors attempted to clone a performance from the excellent movie. Here, the Roma character tried to clone Pacino and it drove me up the wall, becoming a distracting caricature. Too bad because the actor had the right look. He could have created his own character.

I can recommend this production because the script is so strong but of the three or four productions I've seen, this is the most poorly realized. Too bad. I was expecting more, perhaps influenced by a hyped preview in the student newspaper, where the student reporter praised the cast to extremes. Sorry, reporter, it ain't so. You need to get out and see more plays.
