Todd Purdum, the national editor of Vanity Fair, is receiving a lot of criticism for his recent article on Bill Clinton, entitled "The Comeback Id." He focuses on alleged behavioral changes in the old man since having heart surgery, including running around with a younger, faster crowd.
Among the criticisms of Purdum is that he doesn't focus on the good things Clinton has done since leaving the White House. To this, Purdum has the perfect writer's reply: "Asking why I don't focus on that is a little bit like asking why the musical 'South Pacific' doesn't have a song about the Normandy invasion," he said. "It's just a different topic."
I suspect many writers have experience like this, being criticized for not writing what you didn't write.
