Screenwriting software

With Sophocles dead, I've been snooping around for a small, portable screenwriting program that I can run from my flash drive -- and Celtx looks like it may fill the bill. I've recommended this to my students as a free and useful program but it's been a long while since I've checked it out myself -- and it's added features galore since then. This indeed may be just what I've been looking for, a portable screenwriting program. I'll test drive it for a while.

When it comes to scripped writer needs to determine what they need from the program they purchase and pick one that fits their specific needs. Screenwriting software doesn't write the screenplay for you. Why do I say this? I don't want you to be under the impression one software application is "better" or the "best" script writing software. No script writing software should be chosen based on it helping you complete your screenplay "better" or "faster" than another.

True enough, anon, but at the same time, the different programs all have a different interface, feel and bundle of extras that may or may not prove more useful to an individual than something else. For example, I started out with a DOS screenwriting program, Movie Master, and STILL miss the way they formatted scene breakdown reports in terms of quarters of a page. Indeed, the "reports" are what make or break a program for me usually, although I especially liked the screen appearance of Sophocles.

Tools are tools. You can chop down a tree with a small manual saw or with a chain saw. There's clearly a difference. And these differences are especially noted in production mode, when some programs are much more versatile and helpful in budgeting, scheduling, etc, than others.

In other words, don't "randomly" pick a program, thinking they are all the same. They are not.
