A sad day in Jackson County.

Jackson County closes 15 public libraries

Books - Patrons bid a tearful farewell, but the branches could
reopen if a three-year levy is passed in the May election

ASHLAND -- Jayne Donnelly rolled her son's stroller up
to the Ashland Public Library's steel return chute and
dropped in two "Curious George" books. Then she
began to cry.

"I didn't know it would be so emotional,"
she said, lifting her sunglasses to brush away tears.

On Friday, the Jackson County libraries closed their doors,
perhaps indefinitely, after losing the federal money that
makes up nearly all of their operating budget. At branches
from Ashland to Eagle Point, patrons such as Donnelly made
one last trip to return books, check e-mail and say teary
goodbyes to institutions they've come to rely on.
