Tone

With summer close, in between my coughing spells (ha ha, well, seriously) I've been brooding about the TONE of my upcoming novella, the summer project. In this story, tone will be everything. I'll probably try many first pages before I get it right. It needs to be part Vonnegut, part Mailer, a kind of wise guy know-it-all tone, a bit dark, at least that's my sense of it at the moment. Like I say, for this one, I suspect I'll be writing many first pages until I get the tone right before I move forward. How this is told is very important to the overall effect. A challenge. Which is why I'm excited about it.
