Sign of the times

Due to heavy customer demand, Kindle is temporarily sold out. We are working hard to manufacture Kindles as quickly as possible and are prioritizing orders on a first come, first served basis. Please ORDER KINDLE NOW to reserve your place in line. We will keep you informed by email as we get more precise delivery dates. Note that Kindles cannot currently be sold or shipped to customers living outside of the U.S.

Amazon can't produce its new wireless e-book readers fast enough. Ebooks surely will take off once a reader arrives that customers like -- and this may be it. This is an exciting, even revolutionary, development in the book industry.

Yes, I've seen the Sony version, which supposedly utilizes the same technology, and it looks quite good. Basically the screen simulates the look of a printed page--not just a bright and shining screen that gives you a headache--and the "ink" technology stays on the page even after the power has been shut off, meaning that the battery will last longer and you can continue to read.
I wonder though, what kind of effects these new technologies have on the physical process of reading such as the scanning of documents which the internet encourages. If so it will also be interesting to see what types of print will come out specifically for these readers. There is a lot of possibility for play here.
