Russian gypsy songs
Consider this ...
Oo menya
zhenah bweelah
and how melodic it rings because of the triple rhyme ... and how much more melodic than the English, "I had a wife," and how an artist like Bikel can get a lot of mileage out of this, letting the three pillars of the rhyme, the "ah" sound, stretch the consonants into an expression of nostalgic pain. It just doesn't work the same in English, and the melodic features of the Russian language surely contribute to the nostalgic sadness of so many of these songs.
