Awards for Eugene math whiz keep adding up

An 18-year-old math whiz from South Eugene High School who
already has won top honors in prestigious contests has added
to his prize collection at the 57th annual Intel
International Science and Engineering Fair.

Dmitry Vaintrob was named as one of the top three students
at the fair held last week in Albuquerque, N.M. He won a
$50,000 scholarship for his project, "The String
Topology BV Algebra, Hochschild Cohomology and the Goldman
Bracket on Surfaces." The senior also received an
expense-paid trip to the Stockholm International Youth
Science Seminar during the Nobel Prize ceremonies in
December.

Receiving the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award with
Vaintrob were Dayan Li, 17, of Greenbelt, Md., and Philip
Vidal Streich, 16, of Platteville, Wis.
