Failing our kids

MORSE
So if you asked me, Wayne Morse, name
the one thing in our country that you
think will do more to strengthen
American foreign policy in the next
half century, you might be surprised
at my reply. I would say, Do something
to protect the educational standard of
American boys and girls. Do something
to protect American brain power.
Because the only sure and lasting
defense of peace is a highly educated
and enlightened citizenry.

A new study has old news: American 4th graders test poorly in math and science with many small countries ahead of them, even countries considered Third World! Our education system sucks in this regard -- and so the late Sen. Wayne Morse's dream above, which ends my one-man play American Gadfly, did not get realized.

Obama talks the talk of a science education president but he's talked another talks without the walk, so we'll have to wait and see. Meanwhile our kids suffer and will grow into a world into which they, for a change, are not leaders and masters of the technological world.
