Watching the parade

Hoppy and Topper
When I was a kid at the Rose Parade, I didn't like the floats most of all. I liked the cowboys. Especially Hopalong Cassidy, a regular, and also other regulars like The Cisco Kid and Pancho, Lash Larue, Johnny Mac Brown. Sometimes Bob Steele or Randolph Scott would show up. Even Gene Autry or Roy Rogers! Great stuff.

Later, approaching my teens and liking sports, I gave up cowboys and best liked the marching bands, especially the two from the universities playing the Rose Bowl game. It was a special treat when the Univ of Michigan came to town because their marching band played the best fight song ever written.

When I became a teenager, going to the parade was a square thing to do. My buddies and I would go to the beach, which was deserted, or drive the relatively deserted freeways, cruising for whatever it is that teenagers cruise for. This was great fun, too.

Pasadena was a great place to grow up in the fifties.
