The Decline and Fall of the Publishing Empire by Dan Meadows: here is a thought-provoking, personal journey from traditional to digital publishing by an experienced writer and editor. One of his best insights:
Publishers don't vindicate writers, writers vindicate publishers.
Here are his conclusions:
Conclusion #1- Newspapers Are Toast
Conclusion #2- Print Books Will Become Boutique Items
Conclusion #3- Alternatives To Amazon Will Proliferate
Conclusion #4- This Is The Best Time Ever To Be A Writer
Traditional publishing, both books and periodicals, has long operated on what was essentially an exclusionary business model. It was in publishers’ best interest to limit the numbers of writers in the market at any given time. Today, that has shifted. There are no longer any exclusionary forces at work. Anyone can publish anything at any time for minimal cost, either in print or digital. This gives writers a lot more potential leverage than we’ve ever had before.
