I don't think Northwest-centered playwrights, unlike novelists and poets, ever have been much known beyond the region. I think this is because their exposure depends on live productions, not reading a distributed book. If poets were only known by their readings, they too would be more invisible.
Name one Oregon playwright from post war (WWII) period whose name would be familiar to educated theatre goers around the country.

Steven Dietz (of Seattle), Tad Savinar ("Talk Radio"), and Charles Deemer come to mind, but it's kind of a silly question. We have, for example, a good number of really talented actors, directors, and designers in Portland, and far too few of them are known outside Portland.
The old argument, which I stumbled upon this morning while looking for something else, is an endless record that gets loud and quiet, loud and quiet, and has its clones in every region of the country
