Relationship revisionism

A fascinating observation this afternoon. Here's the situation: 20-something years ago, Woman was living with Boyfriend A. She left him and moved in with Boyfriend B. Over the years Woman and Boyfriend A became good friends again.

In a conversation today, Woman said to Boyfriend A, "If you'd have stayed with me, blah blah." Wait a minute! Boyfriend A never left her. She left Boyfriend A for Boyfriend B, breaking A's heart. Has she forgotten this?

Maybe what she means is, If you'd have gotten your act together so I could have stayed with you ... But that is quite different from, If you'd have stayed with me...

Whatever shape the relationship was in, she physically moved out of one abode and into another. She left. He didn't leave. She left.

Neither of us asked for a clarification. The fascination, perhaps, is more interesting than the explanation or rationalization. I vote for rationalization.
