Today, in 1959, I had just moved to Berkeley, transferring from Cal. Tech., and was already getting attracted to the university's vibrant street life over attending classes. By July I'd be homeless, living in a tree house near the Cyclotron in Strawberry Canyon; by August I'd be joining the Army, my recruiter putting me in the Army Security Agency to fill a quota, my fate sealed to become a Russian linguist during the Cold War, military service becoming a great and valued educational experience.
And on this day, in 1959, was the plane crash that took Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, an event immortalized by Don McLean in his song "American Pie."
Check out the annotated American Pie.
