Excellent article in LAT on how Gov. Reagan ruined the previously outstanding U of Cal tuition free(!!!) higher ed system. Over-reacted to Free Speech Movement but also became the stern conservative father figure against emerging counter-culture.
Two early moments: calls in FBI to investigate students and faculty; ends free tuition, "We will not subsidize curiosity" (!). Cal has never been the same.
