I'm not a conservative but I respect serious conservative thinkers like William Buckley, Jr., and Chesterton and others. That conservatism in America has been hijacked by crazies has hurt the country by removing the constructive results of serious dialogue.
When law and order in a society becomes a front burner issue, this loss is especially evident as the argument tends to deteriorate between conservative fanatics bordering on fascism on the one hand and idealistic romantic radicals out of touch with political reality on the other hand.
There also is an interesting tendency for youthful radical/liberals becoming conservative in old age: John Dos Passos is a famous example and, very recently, David Mamet.
There is very little political philosophy in the noise of our culture now. It's mostly predictable knee-jerking rhetoric by ideologues on both ends of the political spectrum. The left has become as mindless as the right.
