Ever since I got my Kindle I've been looking for a good fit for me for a daily newspaper. It's taken this long to find it.
The Oregonian would be the logical choice but I haven't liked the paper in decades, though I loved it in the NW Mag Bianco days, when sometimes the supplement looked more like a literary mag than a newspaper. Besides the Kindle O is over-priced. However, I get a watered-down version free M-F through a web service to keep up on local news.
For I while I bought the Sunday NY Times and let it go at that. But I missed a good paper through the week. I tried various ones -- you get a two week free trial for them all -- but either too much irrelevant "local" things didn't interest me in papers from Seattle, Chicago, DC, or I didn't like the format or the price.
Finally I found a good fit. The LA Times! The local news there is about places I know because I lived there. The layout and features, like a daily list of best cable films, suit me fine. I can follow the UCLA football disaster more closely. The price is right, less than many. So now I've become a regular reader of the LA Times. I wonder how many of us are in Portland.
My other subscriptions on Kindle are The NYorker and the NY Review of Books. I'm set!
