Dear Occupy Portland: This is not the '60s | OregonLive.com:
My recent blog post published as an op-ed in the paper.
So this morning they decide to march during the morning rush hour. Police close a bridge in an effort to make them less disruptive. It's no longer "the people v corporations", it's "the people v the police." And it's not just kids. A labor leader participating says he's there "to get the message out."
Who in their right mind thinks the message isn't out!? These tactics are counter-productive when you are dealing with struggling families who already know they are struggling and already know why. This just changes everything to a law and order issue. This movement is misguided. They should be registering voters for a third progressive party.
This is an expression of frustration and powerlessness. Instead of working to grab power by organizing, they are having public tantrums in the name of free speech. Corporate CEOs are loving this. They may even have spies in there making sure it happens. Or are people really this stupid to act against their own long-range interests?
It surely is masturbation. Feels so good and accomplishes nothing, no seeds for anything new.
I was beginning to think the conservatives might lose in the 2012 election but this movement is sure trying to make sure they win by creating issues of law and order everywhere.
Where's the Port Huron Statement? Where is the Tom Hayden for these times? Where's a vision beyond jacking off?

VERY interesting point about the movement working for the benefit of the conservatives. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be ironic, or serious. Interesting, nonetheless.
Serious. I think it's a sad tragedy because, for the first time in my lifetime, the protest STARTED with majority opinion on the essential issues, there was no need to change minds or attract allies, THEY WERE ALREADY THERE. All that had to be done was to ORGANIZE them into an effective political force, i.e. a voting bloc. But with every new moment in this 60s strategy, allies are being LOST -- just read comments on Facebook or anywhere, all the folks, a vast majority, who like the goals and hate the methods. This plays into the hands of conservatives. Tragic, to alienate such a beginning majority.
