Originally a mini-series, this film is based on the brilliant study of Custer by Evan Connell in the book of the same name. The focus here is on Custer's character, largely driven by vanity, and both book and film are at the top of the considerable piles of works on Custer. There's a sense of impending doom in this story that suggests Greek Tragedy in its unrelenting tension. Gripping, even as it portrays a sad period of our history.
Happened to see it playing on cable this morning so have been watching it (for the 4th or 5th time) while double-tasking.
