Was there ever a more optimistic American writer than Thornton Wilder? in his most remarkable play ... The Skin of Our Teeth ... he tells the history of the planet as a celebration of human survival. Whether through natural disasters ... an Ice Age ... or man-made ones ... war ... we fumble through "by the skin of our teeth." It's an extraordinary record.
Would Wilder retain his optimism today? Probably. After all we survived an Ice Age.
Alas I am not so sure. But then again ... there's always Mars.
