Super committee

Has it ever been easier to be a cynic about Congress? My prediction: the super committee reaches no agreement. The automatic cuts phase in but before they become effective, Congress vetoes them. So we're back where we started, not an inch of progress or resolution, more rancor than ever, and an election coming up.

The Occupy movement is standing on a rare golden opportunity to put voter numbers and popular principles behind a viable third party, energy directed in a much more productive direction than walking into predictable confrontations with the police. Of course, a fringe in the movement wants violent confrontations and there may even be corporate spies in there because changing the focus to law and order lets corporations and the wealthy off the hook.

This really is a rare opportunity in terms of popular consensus. It will be a tragedy if it doesn't find meaningful political expression rather than the current symbolic expression.

Cynic that I am, I predict lost opportunity.

The current Occupy movement is to progressive change as masturbation is to starting a family.
