Joe Paterno

I've been a great fan of Paterno for a long time. Stanford and Penn State were the great examples of what college football could be, competitive teams with true scholar-athletes playing who put academics first or very high.

But this scandal does not surprise me. I've seen too many "shocking" events before this to be surprised. No human depravity surprises me any more.

But Paterno's statement today, saying he will retire at the end of the season, is a self-serving mask that troubles me. He says he is giving the Board of Trustrees a break, so they don't have to decide whether or not to fire him. Forget me now, he says. I'll go. Worry about other things. IN OTHER WORDS, take me off the hook for my behavior, don't make me pay for any past mistakes.

They should fire Paterno today.
