Thoughts about the Martin case

Now that Zimmerman is arrested, here are some things I've been thinking about.

  • The local police were happy to let the case go as self-defense, just another black kid being where he shouldn't be, self-defense, that's that. However, if the kid had been white, if Zimmerman had been black, it's impossible for me to imagine it would have happened this way. Institutionalized racism is alive and well.
  • People using social networks refused to let the case die. They petitioned, they marched.
  • The governor had the good sense to appoint a special prosecutor, thanks to the this pressure (and for no other reason).
  • Zimmerman is his own worst enemy.
  • The special prosecutor is first rate.
  • The new lawyer for Zimmerman is first rate. This ain't over by a long shot.
