Send Bird-Watching Data Straight to Scientists With Your Smartphone | Wired Science | Wired.com:
I've long been a supporter of citizen involvement in collecting scientific data. In high school I was one of the few teenage members in the country of the AAVSO, the American Association of Variable Star Observers, headquartered at Harvard Observatory. I was assigned a few stars, which I kept an eye on, estimating their brightness, with religious dedication. Often it meant getting up at 3 a.m., even on a school night, to collect my data. I loved it.
As strokes, at the end of the year the Observatory would publish stats on number of observations made. Someone in South Africa always won by a considerable margin but on several occasions I was in the top 50, which made me proud. I may have been the highest high school student, too, without knowing it.
So I recommend doing this if it's your fancy. Very rewarding.
