March Madness is done, as far as I'm concerned, which is to say neither final interests me. The men's game puts two cherished programs against one another, which would have been great a few decades ago. But now the men's game is just a charade, a warm-up farm system for the pros, which is dominated by Big Men and the histrionics of dunking and other ego-driven, boring gestures. Let them raise the baskets three feet and I'll watch.
The women's final puts a team trying to emulate the men against an opponent they should beat easily.
But there were two great highlights this March Madness! The first Friday of the men's dance was terrific, with lots of upsets. And the first half of yesterday's Stanford-Baylor game was outstanding. If Stanford had not lost its offense in the second half, missing countless open shots, they would have won because they held the Baylor Giant to 13 points with a brilliant defense. If Stanford had played an average offensive game, they would have put Baylor in its place. Didn't happen.
So two good days of bball isn't bad. Now the pros, disguised as student athletes, can go make their millions and surely don't need my cantankerous attention.
