Countdown to the 75th Santa Anita Derby!:
This was a very big deal when I was growing up, as important as the Kentucky Derby. Interestingly enough, we followed the races without betting on them, except for my granddad occasionally when he lived with us. And we followed the jockeys more than the horses, especially Willie Shoemaker. "Shoemaker won three races yesterday," Dad would say over the morning paper. We seldom went to the races but this was as legitimate a sport as boxing and midget car racing, my dad's two favorite sports. So I inherited an interest in the Santa Anita Derby and will watch it tomorrow. And the Triple Crown, one of my favorite events, is just ahead.
