Kaldi Coffee and Tea in Atwater Village just east of Hollywood is the subject of a delightful profile in this morning's LA Times. It's a cafe where laptops outnumber coffee cups as screenwriters and others use the cafe as a working office.
We have the equivalent scattered around Portland ... most cities do. The country is filled with creative folks struggling to pay the rent with their art. Most probably don't succeed but don't call the effort foolhardy. Call it honorable.
I survived as a working artist for several decades before semi-retiring to the greater security of part-time teaching. I had help along the way by grants, which are harder to come by today. Right place, right time, the story of my life.
