Most
Americans seem to be under an erroneous impression, given by
teachers, preachers, textbooks, and pundits, that the Founding
Fathers were pious bores. So it is time to talk clearly about them
as they really were: not the good Christians our teachers droned on
about, but skeptical men of the Enlightenment who questioned each
and every received idea they had been taught. They were deeply read
in political philosophy, interested in science, and well versed in
theological matters. They consistently challenged the religious
dogma they heard from the pulpit, both openly and in private, among
friends.
