December at the Los Angeles County Crematory
Each December the LA County Crematory scatters the ashes of unclaimed and unknown bodies collected during the year. Over 1600 in the recent ceremony, according to an article in the LA Times this morning. The ceremony uses a wide variety of religious texts, is done during the day, is attended by a few strangers, the recent one by half a dozen employees of the Catholic Worker. The ashes are scattered at various locations in the city. As described, it's a moving ritual, one little known by Angelinos. I lived there for years and never heard of it.
