Growing up evangelical
Markie Hancock's 2007 documentary "Born Again" is a fine film. She traces her struggle growing up evangelical and later learning to embrace her true self as a lesbian, as a filmmaker, as a liberal. With two siblings, one brother of whom also left the faith of their parents, Markie also struggles to retain a sense of family until learning to create her own from fresh sources. This is a story that somehow rings sad and heroic at the same time and one repeated, I suspect, far more often in the culture than we know. Well worth seeing.
